Hiking Clubs

Here are a collection of websites for various hiking and outing clubs and organizations in and around central Pennsylvania. Many of these clubs conduct day hikes, on weekly and monthly basis, as well as leading overnight backpacking trips. These hiking club provide a great opportunity to interactive with others that share your interest in hiking and backpacking. The organizations listed here provide an opportunity to give back to the trails that we all love. Monetary donations and membership dues to these organizations help support trail maintenance. The money that they collect purchases supplies for keeping trails clear from brush, paint for blazing trais, as well as purchasing lumber and hardware for bridges and signage. Even better yet, take advantage of your membership and volunteer. Trails in Pennsylvania are maintained by volunteers and without their help we wouldn’t have nearly as many opportunities to enjoy the solitude of Penn’s Woods as we do today.

Rock Run ATV Park

First and foremost we’re about having fun! Rock Run Recreation area, its employees, and volunteers are excited that you and your families travel from all over the United States and choose to spend your weekends and holidays with us. Set in the rural parts of northern Cambria and southern Clearfield Counties, our trails provide spectacular views from atop the Allegheny Mountains. We consider ourselves a first class recreation park, and hope you feel the same after you visit us.

Rock Run started out with 50 miles of trails for ATVs, UTVs, and dirtbikes. With the help of the Yamaha Trails Initiative Program, we were able to add an additional 20 miles of trails. Rock Run now provides over 140 miles of trails that you can enjoy on whatever type of machine you like.

We have also worked with multiple volunteer groups from the OHV community and developed a trail system that provides enjoyment and challenges for the everyday driver to the most extreme OHV’s.

Path of the 1989 Johnstown Flood Trail

This historical trail enables the user to start just below the breached South Fork Dam and follow the same watercourse that floodwaters took in 1889, when they surged into Johnstown.

The Path of the Flood Trail provides numerous trail-side markers that tell the story and enable users to visualize the scene within the  Little Conemaugh River valley, which remains largely unchanged more than 120 years later.  Additionally, this trail is naturally beautiful and challenging with some steeper grades and varying trail surfaces.Photo by Patti Jones.

The Jim Mayer Riverswalk Trail

Named for a local conservationist, the Jim Mayer Riverswalk Trail is a delightful, 3.1-mile (5k) urban trail on the east end of the City of Johnstown.

Following the Stonycreek River, the trail begins in Riverside on Michigan Ave. and ends in Hornerstown on Messenger St., near Sandyvale Memorial Gardens & Conservancy.

This trail offers beautiful views of the river, abundant bird-life and wildflowers, picturesque Buttermilk Falls and serenity within an urban setting.

The Jim Mayer Riverswalk Trail is part of a growing urban trail system in Johnstown that currently follows the Stonycreek River from Central Avenue behind an industrial complex to the residential community of Riverside. One of its best features is the 50-foot Buttermilk Falls, located about mid-trail. The Riverswalk is nearly level, and its surface is groomed and easily ridden or walked.
