Explore Johnstown’s legacy and the 1889 flood that changed Pennsylvania forever

On May 31, 1889, the greatest disaster in Pennsylvania history occurred when the South Fork Dam on the Little Conemaugh River burst. The waters of Lake Conemaugh went roaring through the valley, causing significant damage to the communities downstream and resulting in the death of over 2,200 people, making it, at the time, the largest loss of life in a single event in US history.

Benscreek Canoe Club

The Blairsville Community Development Authority and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce is hosting a paddle down the Conemaugh River from Robindale to Blairsville on Saturday, May 27. They will have around 40 paddlers, many of whom will be first timers.  We could use some competent paddlers for safety. If interested contact Mike Burk or Rick Bloom. Free picnic included.

The Stonycreek Greenhouse Park

Greenhouse Park is situated along the Stonycreek River between Johnstown and Tire Hill and offers pavilions, a volleyball court, walking track and other amenities within its 11 acres. Located along PA Route 403 at 100 Greenhouse Road, Johnstown, the park has become one of the region’s most-popular event venues, hosting the Stonycreek Rendezvous, Thunder in the Valley events, Wing Blasts, concerts and a variety of community events each year.
