Historic Locations in Westmoreland County, PA – Westmoreland County PA

Genealogists, teachers, and students are able to find a wealth of resources concerning Westmoreland County history at the Westmoreland County Historical Society.  The Westmoreland County Historical Society possess a 4,000 volume genealogy, local history research library, a 500,000 item archival collection, publications on local history, an archival collection of photos, documents, memorabilia, and more.  They offer speakers, school programs, and research services, as well as info on Historic Hannas Town (where an active archeological dig continues).

PA Museums Located In The Laurel Highlands and Southern Alleghenies Area

Visit PA museums in the Laurel Highlands and Southern Allegheny mountains region of Pennsylvania on a family vacation getaway. The area has diverse museums including a coal, railroad, antique car and kids museum.There’s definitely something for everyone in this area of the state.The city of Johnstown has a museum and monument related to the flood that took place in the late 1800’s.Bring your camera as you witness a sad part of Pennsylvania’s past. The entire family can find a museum that caters to their interests.We like the museums in this region of the state as they offer history, diversity and fun!

The National Aviary

Always entertaining and educational, National Aviary bus tours are led by Ornithologist, Bob Mulvihill (above holding a male Cape May Warbler caught for banding; photo by Pam Ferkett).  Bob provides expert insight for participants of all ages and backgrounds.  He lived and worked in the Laurel Highlands for more than 30 years before returning to Pittsburgh to work at the National Aviary, and knows its birdlife very well!
